Startup delay - witing for printer
Whenever I start PlanMaker - both by double clicking on a document, or from the start menu, it brings up the attached popup and waits for ~ 60 secs - the cancel button is not active, so I just have to wait. My printer is not normally online, but when I want to print something and switch it on, it selects and prints normally.

SoftMaker Office needs to ask your printer driver for certain metrics, and your printer driver is written in a way that it cannot provide this information without communicating with the printer.
You might check if your printer driver has a setting where you can turn off bidirectional communication. If not, update your printer driver. Maybe there is a newer version that doesn't need the printer to be on.
Incidentally, this doesn't look like a SoftMaker Office dialog box. I think it comes from your printer driver.
