Troubleshooting: cursor won't highlight when I click and scroll

Post by delusions »

I have an unusual problem that I imagine is because I'm using an old laptop (Windows 8.1)

When I click on a body of text and scroll for the purpose of copy/paste, changing the font, etc.; the text doesn't highlight. Interestingly enough, those features are still functional, but it won't highlight so I can see the text before I use those features.

Can anyone tell me what I should do to fix this problem? Thanks!

I'm not quite sure what you're doing exactly. When I want to select text, I set the cursor at the beginning of the intended text block, press the mouse button, keep it pressed and draw the mouse to the end of the text block. When I click into the text and scroll, nothing happens, but that's normal behaviour.

Seeing the same thing. What appears to be going on is that the text is being highlighted, but in a color that's almost indistinguishable from white.

So at least when I see something that sounds like this issue, it's due to the fact that the highlight color doesn't make sense.

Possible workaround: I'm finding that this is true for the default "User Interface" setting. If you are seeing this issue, try the following:

1. Select the File tab
2. At the right end, click 'Customize' and select 'User Interface'.
3. Select a user interface other than the one you're using.
4. You should find that the highlight color is now readable.

NOTE: It's REALLY HARD to revert to the new user interface if you select the old one, so I suggest not picking either of the 'old UI' options unless you're sure you want it.
