Text flow in columns

When setting up two columns on a page, the text continues to flow across the page. The sentence you are typing would normally go across the page from the left margin to the right margin. When I format the section as two columns and start typing the sentence just skips over the space between the columns and continues to the right margin on the same line. The only thing that setting up two columns does is to introduce a blank space in the middle of the sentences.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
The cat felt left out and began acting strangely.

How can I make the text flow down column one and then go to the top of column two like in a newspaper?
